As COVID-19 continues to impact the nation, 2020 fall conferences such as SACNAS and ABRCMS pivoted to online platforms. To celebrate the perseverance of student researchers and the biomedical research community, the Diversity Program Consortium (DPC) launched a social media campaign highlighting BUILD trainees and promoting participating partners like the National Research Mentoring Network and National Institute of General Medical Sciences.

The social media campaign originated on the DPC LinkedIn network and spanned across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The campaign featured visuals of BUILD trainees who were attending or presenting research at SACNAS (Oct. 19-24) and ABRCMS (Nov. 9-14). A DPC LinkedIn BUILD group engaged students with conference-related questions and tips, and the group continues to grow as a space where alumni, current students and BUILD staff and faculty can connect.

The campaign generated high engagement and interest from inside the DPC community as well as from the biomedical science community and those in diversity and inclusion fields. During October and November, the DPC LinkedIn network grew by more than 400 connections, 200 page followers and 100 additions to the BUILD group. The fall conference campaign also intersected with the DPC’s soft-launch of its #FaceOfScience campaign on Nov. 8 with a short video. Face of Science will return in 2021 with a longer video series.
