The Diversity Program Consortium community attended the 2019 ABRCMS Conference in Anaheim, CA, Nov. 13-16.
Over 150 students, faculty and staff attended the 5th DPC-organized event on Friday, Nov. 13, enjoying a dinner, distinguished speaker, student research presentation and a creative problem-solving activity. Distinguished speaker Dr. Mario Barro, an international expert on vaccines and the Associate Vice President and Head of Advanced Research at FluNXT/Sanofi Pasteur, gave a talk called “The current state of the union on infectious disease outbreaks and risks and benefits of vaccination.” Barro went over a brief history of vaccines, pandemics, and the consequences of not vaccinating.
Following his talk, UTEP undergraduate Julienne Salvador presented her research relating to the West Nile virus, called “Interfon-induced Schlafen 11 is a Novel Flavivirus Restriction Factor.” Students also participated in a "Pitching for Health" activity where they created original social media messages informing diverse communities about vaccines.
Over 60 BUILD undergraduates from nine BUILD sites presented their research at the conference, spanning across multiple disciplines. Many students also won awards at the awards ABRCMS banquet.
