In Phase I, California State University Long Beach (CSULB) BUILD added new research-focused courses and faculty mentoring workshops, and worked to establish a research culture supportive of undergraduate students. They have also begun to institutionalize student training program components within offices and centers on campus.
BUILD Phase II includes transition plans to fully institutionalize program components and leverage institutional commitments to test innovative training components for sustainment by the university after the NIH BUILD funding ends.
The faculty-centered element of Phase II will increase faculty perspectives on diversity through several initiatives, including the implementation of an Advancing Inclusive Mentoring (AIM) training program, and help faculty strengthen their research capacities and compete for extramural funding. There are additional collaborations planned with the BUILD programs at CSU Northridge and San Francisco State University, as part of the CSU BUILD Alliance, which will complement the previously established collaborative agreements with CSULB and its two R1 partners.
