SF BUILD alumna Chinomnso Okorie uses her research skills to fight health disparities
Chinomnso Okorie, an alumna of San Francisco State University’s (SFSU) BUILD program, is putting her research skills to use by doing community-engaged research to investigate the relationship between environmental exposure to lead and preterm birth in her hometown of Bayview, California. Her project highlights the social and health disparities experienced by Black communities in San Francisco.
As an SFSU undergraduate, Okorie participated in SF BUILD to learn how to use data and science to study health disparities.
She graduated from SFSU with a Bachelor of Science in cellular and molecular biology in 2017 and a Master of Science in biology in 2019.

Nature spotlights SF BUILD PI Tung Nguyen
In the most recent feature in Nature’s short series about decolonizing the biosciences, the journal highlighted Tung Nguyen, PhD, who was appointed the Associate Vice Chancellor for Research – Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Anti-Racism (AVC Research - IDEA) in September.
Nguyen, a health-equity researcher who is also the director of the UCSF Asian American Research Center on Health, said anti-racism efforts start with engaging underserved communities and nurturing diverse trainees in health research and health care. He also offered advice for reforms in health research.

University of Detroit Mercy highlights ReBUILDetroit scholar for her SACNAS poster award
Fatima Herrera is one of the 110 graduate and undergraduate students who were honored by the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) at the 2022 National Diversity in STEM Conference from Oct. 27 to 29 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Herrera, an undergraduate student in the ReBUILDetroit program at the University of Detroit Mercy, received an award for her outstanding research presentation on the “Identification of the Bacteriophage Resistance Mechanisms in the Dental Pathogen, Streptococcus mutans.”
