SACNAS 2016 – The Annual Meeting of the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS)
October 13-15 | Long Beach, California

This year at SACNAS 2016, The National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) had an active presence, offering two workshops, an official conference booth (#937), and a first-of-its-kind networking event inviting members across the NRMN network to convene and connect in person.

NRMN Master Facilitators Anne Lynn Gillian-Daniel and Sonia Zárate led a mentor training session on October 13th entitled “Changing the Face of Science Through Mentoring.”

On the evening of the October 13, NRMN hosted a special “Meet and Greet” networking event, the first of its kind. This event invited all members of the NRMN community in attendance at SACNAS to mingle with one another and offered opportunities for those less familiar with NRMN to gain inspiration from hearing from current NRMN members who all share a passion for the importance of mentoring to success in science.

Over 80 conference attendees turned out for this new networking opportunity, including students from the BUILD programs, and a diverse mix of students and investigators with varying levels of prior familiarity with NRMN and its various program offerings.

On October 15, Stephanie House and Ahna Skop, also NRMN Master Facilitators, led a session entitled “Mentoring Through Movement.” This novel session allowed participants to explore what it means to be an effective mentor and mentee as they learned to lead and follow salsa. While learning the foundations of the dance, participants discussed how they can create better foundations for their mentoring relationships.

Those in attendance from NRMN included Drs. Dina Stroud, MariaElena Zavala, Nancy Schwartz, Kermin Martínez-Hernández, Anne Lynne Gillian-Daniel, Sonia Zárate, Jamboor Vishwanatha, Ahna Skop and Stephanie House, as well as Thad Unold and Andrea Gouldy.

Also supporting NRMN at SACNAS 2016 was Dr. Alberto Roca of Minority Postdoc’s DiverseScholar, Daniel McNulty of the Biophysical Society and Dr. Chellu Chetty of Savannah State University.
